I’m trying to think of a good reason why I don’t like this book. It’s like this: The entire book, Holden Caulfield complained about people being “phony,” yet he showed some of the qualities he disliked as well. He was, essentially, a hypocrite. An imperfect person criticizing an imperfect world. There were some touching moments, but, for me, they were over-shadowed by my dislike of the narrator himself.

J.D. Salinger pulled it off really well though. The characters were believable, but for me, they just weren’t likable. Or, actually, Holden Caulfield wasn’t likable. He was annoying. Some of the other characters were pretty cool, though. Like Holden’s brother, Allie, wrote poems on his baseball glove.

You might like The Catcher in the Rye, you might not. I didn’t, but some people love it. Mark David Chapman likes it. Hey, here’s a thought: If The Catcher in the Rye would have never been published, John Lennon might still be alive.

I bought this book a few days ago at Borders, along with six other (different) books. I’ll review them as well.

I’m sorry adoring, silent audience, I’m not going to start using horribly poor grammar, swear off periods, and start posting multitudes of shitty pictures of me and whatever other shit I happen to see. We here at Determinia have standards.

In other news, I started reading The Catcher in the Rye today. It’s supposed to be a classic, and a couple of friends really like it. I’m not crazy about it thus far, but that could change. I’ll probably review it on here.

I hate talking about myself, because I am aware of what an incredibly unimportant person I am. Why the hell should you read what I write? Why the hell would anyone read what that girl I mentioned above writes? Oh well.

The Fountain is a good movie. The plot was a bit… odd, but still interesting. The movie overall was just so damn pretty. I’m listening to the soundtrack right now, because it’s so awesome. You should watch it. Trailer after the break, if you’re interested.

 I expect many of you have seen the Obama Girl and Hot4Hill videos. I wonder if every candidate will eventually have their own singing mascot girl? Maybe it will eventually turn into some kind of mark of rank in future elections. A candidate isn’t truly serious at having a chance for the presidency without his or her own Singing Mascot Girl. This is our blog, Determinia. I am, obviously, Austin, and the other two who will be writing with me are Kasey and Florian. They’ll introduce themselves soon. Probably.

I can’t speak for the others, but I’ll be attempting to update every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We’ll see how often that actually happens.
Kasey and Florian may update on those days as well, or different days, or never, or just pop in once in a while to say hello. Organization is not our strong point. And English isn’t Flo’s first language, but he’ll tell you about himself, I expect.

Determinia. It’s a word I thought I made up, but it turns up on some Spanish web pages when I Google it. I came up with it when I discovered determinism, which is the idea that everything is predetermined, that the physical universe, at any moment, has one possible outcome. All Christians, whether they know it or not, are determinists. God knowing everything that will ever happen makes that true.
The scientific community has moved away from determinism, because in quantum physics, some things (like the movement of atoms) are unpredictable, meaning that the universe is not predetermined. There is the hidden variable theory, which Einstein supported, that says these things are predictable if we knew everything about them. Interesting stuff.
